Obituary

Jeanne Hamilton Vermillion
Born Jeanne Louise Haupt to Evelyn and Leslie Haupt in Bakersfield, California on December 20, 1923,
The life of this lovely woman slipped away peacefully on December 1, 2019. Her long life was full of adventure, laughter and love shared with the many people who were lucky enough to know her.

Soon after high school graduation in Bakersfield, Jeanne met a dashing young soldier, Richard Herbert "Herb" Hamilton, and fell head over heels. She married the love of her life and they soon moved to Hobbs, New Mexico where Herb was stationed as a flight instructor. After the War, they returned to Visalia, California to raise their five children, Chris, Mark, David, Susan and Peter.

With her youngest child in first grade, Jeanne returned to school finish her college degree and became an elementary school teacher. When Herb was offered an opportunity in the funeral industry, the empty nesters moved to Montgomery, Alabama and then to San Diego. Tragedy struck when Herb was diagnosed with leukemia and died at the age of 60. Broken-hearted, Jeanne returned to Visalia and her career as a teacher. Her life was again filled with joy with the marriages of her children and the births of her six grandchildren, Scott, Nick, Elliot, David, Stefani and Andrew.

Returning to her beloved San Diego, Jeanne met a kind and caring companion in Henry Vermillion. He proposed almost immediately upon meeting the tall, stylish woman who loved to dance, entertain, and travel. They enjoyed many years together until his death in ... at 99 years of age.

Known for her beautiful smile, self-deprecating sense of humor and gracious interest in everyone she met, Jeanne had many, many friends. They all knew that her family, including eventually five precious great-grandchildren - Chloe, Sawyer, Paige, Hudson, and Sydney - were always the center of her life. She delighted in birthday celebrations, school graduations, sporting events, family dinners and holidays.

Jeanne is survived by all her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and daughters in law Lynn Hamilton, Nancy Huneke and Donna DeDiemar, sister-in-law Catherine Haupt, and many nieces and nephews. As the Irish proverb muses "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal." Jeanne will be missed by all who admired and loved her, yet her memory with endure with us forever.

Jean was an elegant and beautiful lady. I have fond memories of Jean and her amazing energy taking my step aerobics classes.
She always had a kind word and lit up the room with her beautiful smile.
My deepest condolences to her family.
With love,
Jeanna Beauchamp

This lovely woman shared part of her later life with my dad, Henry Gray Vermillion. They married in October 1996 and had a very full life together until my dad's death in May of 2010.
Jeanne was in love with her kids, grandkids and great grands. She was a very gracious and thoughtful mother and grandmother, hostess to all visitors (well, probably not to those rats that infested their backyard once-they were not allowed to be visitors.)
She filled her long life with everybody and everything she loved and enjoyed. She showed caring and a feisty humor and outlook on life.
She left a hole of different sizes in many hearts.
Goodbye to you, lovely soul
