Obituary

Malcolm Gruber, age 77, passed away on June 10, 2020 in Murrieta, California. He was the husband of Sevilla Gruber, to whom he was married for 52 years.

He was born to Leslie Robert and Vera Joy Gruber in Waterloo, Iowa in 1942. Not content for small town life, Malcolm enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 18. He worked in Navy telecommunications throughout his career, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His service to country took him far and wide, including a tour in the Vietnam War and postings in The Philippines, Morocco, Hawaii and California.

Malcolm retired from the Navy and was honorably discharged after 21 years of service. He used his extensive experience with voice and data networks at Hughes Aircraft, where he worked until his second retirement. Throughout all of this, he found time to earn his Associate degree at Hawaii Pacific University, as well as his Bachelors and Masters degrees from National University.

Malcolm’s service also continued after his Naval career. He volunteered his time with Community Emergency Response Teams, local police and fire departments, and with the Red Cross as a medical instructor and volunteer.

He is survived by his wife; son Ferdinand and his wife Heather; son Russell, his wife Wendy, and their children Kaleila and Noah; and daughter Cheryl, her husband Geoff, and their daughters Lauren and Audrey.
