Obituary

Joan had a love of books as well as a love of libraries. She believed everyone should have access to the legal material they may need. She obtained her JD from Western State University College of Law (now Thomas Jefferson School of Law) and her Master of Science, Library Science, from Catholic University of America with the goal of working as a law librarian. She started her career as a Reference and Government Librarian with the University of San Diego Legal Research Center. She later became the Assistant Director for Public Services at Western State University College of Law. She subsequently accepted a position as the North County Branch Manager for the San Diego County Public Law Library. She was later promoted to Assistant Director for Branch Services. In 2005 Joan was made the Acting Director during the hiring process for the permanent Director. Joan retired in 2007 but returned to the San Diego County Public Law Library as a Professional Librarian Consultant from June of 2008 to August of 2009 to coordinate and catalog fifty plus years of federal and state government documents. Joan returned to the San Diego County Public Law Library at the request of the Law Library Board of Trustees. From December of 2009 to April of 2010 she filled the position of Acting Director during the hiring process for the permanent Director. Joan never stopped loving books or libraries. She believed these were essential for all our communities. Above all, she enjoyed the interaction with her colleagues and with the public.
Joan was also devoted to her family. She also had a passion for cooking and enjoyed making food for her family and friends. In everything, "She did the best she could". She will be missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Joan at the University of San Diego Legal Research Center, her first of many professional jobs as a law librarian. I remember her as calm, kind and capable. My condolences to her family.

I remember going to have coffee at the blue mug in Escondido. We talked about our daughters, life, etc. she always made me feel empowered. She will be greatly missed. She was my mentor, my role model. God bless until we meet again. ❤️

I remember working at the law library about 12 years ago. She was such a nice person and so professional. My thoughts and prayers will be with her family at this time.

Those of us who worked with Joan during the early years of SANDALL (San Diego Law Librarians association) are grieved to hear of her passing and we extend our deepest sympathy to Joan's family. Joan was a professional in every sense of the word, but she was also warm and funny and so very helpful. I think the last time I saw Joan was in the early 2000s when we served on a panel as speakers. It had been a while since we had seen each other and it was great to get together with her over coffee and just catch up. She will be missed. Condolences, June Mac Leod

My thoughts and prayers to Joan's family. Joan is the sweetest, nicest and most encouraging colleague and friend that I know. She was an exceptional law librarian, leader, and mentor. Her sweet smile, kind words and generous heart will be missed.
